Food waste is a worldwide issue. It heavily contributes towards the rising rate of climate change, and results in around $936 bn dollars of annual economic loss. With Moss, I wanted to create a product based on the No.1 reason people dislike throwing away food - it’s a waste of money. Moss is a counter top compost bin. When the user goes to throw something away, the lid opens using motion sense, and a camera underneath the lid scans and identifies the food thrown into it. As the data is built up, the bin displays the estimated cost of the wasted food. In addition it shows the 4 most thrown out foods such that the user may better understand their shopping habits and make more economically well advised purchases.
